Cats of Morocco
As a cat lover, I was pleasantly surprised by all the cats in Morocco. They are everywhere—in the streets, in the stores, even inside restaurants. Most of my meals involved a cat curled up next to me or circling my feet for scraps.
When I asked a local why there were so many, he answered that Muhammad said cats should be loved and cherished. Though most are pretty lean, more like strays in America, they are definitely cared for. They seem to belong to the community, rather than particular families, and everyone takes care of them. Many shops had food bowls for cats that came in and out, and I saw some with fresh bandages.
My favorite cat encounter was in Tangier when I walked passed a mother cat watching over a pillow full of kittens.
